IDERA SQL Diagnostic Manager v10.1 Release
By: Greg Robidoux
IDERA just announced the release of SQL Diagnostic Manager version 10.1. This new version offers many new features to an already exhaustive list of functionality that's part of SQL Diagnostic Manager. The product just keeps getting better and continues to add features to aid the database administrator.
In this new release of SQL Diagnostic Manager here are some of the highlights:
Integration with IDERA Dashboard
If you are familiar with the IDERA tools, you are probably aware of the standard look and feel that IDERA has introduced with their tools using the dashboard. The dashboard allows for easy movement from one tool to the next, as well as a standard design that makes it easy to work with all of the IDERA tools including global tagging of instances across products. This is also true for the installation process that has a common installation procedure among the different tools. SQL Diagnostic Manager is now integrated into the IDERA dashboard.
SCOM Integration / Enhancements
System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) is a data center management system that is used in many environments that use SQL Server. SCOM allows you to monitor your overall environment, but doesn't offer the level of features that SQL Diagnostic Manager offers for SQL Server. By integrating the two tools, DBAs and system administrators can get the best of both worlds. By using SQL Diagnostic Manager to dig deep into the SQL Server issues, the alerting and notification components of SCOM can be used so alerts across the enterprise are consistent. With this new release of SQL Diagnostic Manager specific alerts can be sent to SCOM as an alert or as an event allowing you to take further consistent action within SCOM. Also, with these changes, the alerts from SCOM will look like the alerts from SQL Diagnostic Manager providing deeper insight into the issue.
Toggle Wait Stats Based on Alert Events
When determining the cause of SQL Server issues, having information is key to understanding what went wrong and what needs to be done to resolve the problem. One of the downsides is how much data to collect and when is too much data collection a bad thing. A new feature in SQL Diagnostic Manager is the ability to automatically begin collection of detailed wait stats when a specific event occurs. This allows you to collect the data when there might a problem, versus collecting way too much data all of the time. The automatic toggling allows data collection when you need it and saves resources when you don't.
PowerShell Response Actions
In this latest release of SQL Diagnostic Manager, PowerShell response actions are now easier to implement. As you may know, PowerShell has become the tool to use for system administration. New features continue to be added to PowerShell to administer Windows and SQL Server that allow you to take command line level action. IDERA realizes the importance of PowerShell and has made execution of PowerShell scripts triggered by alerts easier to configure and implement.
PowerShell Snap-in Enhancements
As mentioned, PowerShell has become the primary tool for system administration to manage your servers. Now there are several things you can do to manage and configure SQL Diagnostic Manager using PowerShell commands. This is great enhancement if you have an environment with several servers and need to make adjustments using a command instead of having to click through the GUI to make all of the required updates. This saves you time from having to manage and configure SQL Diagnostic Manager, so you can spend more time on finding and fixing database issues.
Configurable Heat Map
Another great feature within SQL Diagnostic Manager is the heat map that shows what servers need immediate attention. The downside to a standard heat map is that not all severs have equal importance, so servers that you don't care about may have more issues, but they are not the ones that need the most attention. SQL Diagnostic Manager now provides a more configurable way to modify the health index calculations and weight instances based on tags. This way the servers that really require attention are the servers you see first when looking at the heat map.
